A Rest Stop Rooted in History
After a long stretch on the road from Umzumbe to Cathcart, we were more than ready to slow things down.
The drive itself was an adventure — long, winding, and incredibly scenic, with stretches that brushed along views toward the Lesotho mountains. It was one of those journeys that reminds you just how vast and diverse South Africa really is.
A Cozy Stay at a Living Museum
We checked in at The Old Thomas River Museum, where both chalets and camping are available. With the evenings turning properly cold, we opted for a chalet — and it was exactly what we needed after a long day on the road.
What makes this place truly special is the care and passion poured into it by the current owners. They’ve done an incredible job restoring the property, transforming it into a living, breathing piece of history.
You can even stay in the old station master’s house, adding to the immersive experience. Scattered across the property are sheds filled with antiques sourced from all over the country — each piece telling its own story, each corner inviting curiosity.
A Town Where Time Stands Still
Cathcart itself is a quiet, small town where time seems to slow right down. For us, it holds even deeper meaning — with roots tied into both our family histories, making the visit feel personal in a way that’s hard to describe.
This isn’t a place for rushing. It’s where you pause, breathe, and reconnect — with your surroundings, your people, and the stories that came before you.
A Living Lesson in South African History
Staying at The Old Thomas River Museum felt like stepping into a different era. It’s the kind of place that naturally sparks curiosity — perfect for kids eager to learn, or adults wanting to reconnect with South Africa’s rich and layered past.
If you’re looking for a meaningful, educational stop along your journey, this is it.
The History of Cathcart, Eastern Cape
Cathcart has a history deeply rooted in South Africa’s colonial and military past.
The town was established in the mid-19th century and named after Sir George Cathcart, who served as Governor of the Cape Colony from 1852 to 1854. During this period, the Eastern Cape frontier was a contested region, marked by a series of conflicts between British forces and the Xhosa people, known collectively as the Cape Frontier Wars.
Cathcart originated as a military outpost, strategically positioned along key routes in the region. Over time, it developed into a small agricultural and transport town, supporting surrounding farms and serving as a waypoint for travelers and trade.
The arrival of railway lines in the broader region further contributed to its growth, connecting rural communities and enabling the movement of goods and people. Infrastructure such as the Thomas River station (now part of The Old Thomas River Museum) played an important role in this network.
However, like many small South African towns, Cathcart’s prominence declined over time due to shifts in transport routes, economic centralisation in larger cities, and the gradual reduction of rail-based travel and infrastructure. As road networks improved and urban centres expanded, smaller towns like Cathcart became quieter, with less commercial activity.
Today, Cathcart remains a small, rural town — no longer a major hub, but still rich in heritage and historical significance. Its preserved sites and stories offer a glimpse into a formative period of South Africa’s past.
